Jim buddy’s donut 

Today I’m reviewing something I’ve never tried before, a protein donut! I heard that there was going to be a stand at Bodypower 2017 called ‘Jim Buddy’s’ and that they do high protein donuts, so I was immediately intrigued. I know I could always make my own ‘pronut’ but it’s so much easier just to buy one, especially when you’re short on time. 

I feel bad for my companion, as I literally dragged them round every stall going “no, this isn’t the donuts” and buying loads of stuff in the process (was always going to happen, it’s Bodypower, what do you expect?!). Anyway, when I found them I was so excited and wanted to buy all of the flavours but unfortunately, I could only buy one due to limited space, so I chose the chocolate orange flavour. All of the other 3 flavours sounded great too but when it comes down to any decision, chocolate will always win for me. 
So each donut is packed in its own little tub and has 99kcals. Of this, 10g is protein, 2g net carbs (annoyingly they don’t tell you the actual carbs, although this can easily be worked out) and 3.5g fat. The ingredient list is also relatively ‘good’ in terms of the fact that it’s made with ingredients I actually know of, such as whey protein, Greek yoghurt and orange zest, among other things. 

Some of the icing of my donut did come off onto the lid of the tub which was annoying but I just scraped it back on and I suppose there isn’t an alternative way of packing them, so not really much they could do. 
Now, for the taste! The chocolate orange flavour was honestly really good – not artificial which I find a lot of protein treats to be. It’s no Terry’s but it was still great! The icing was a great consistency and was the texture of ‘real’, ‘normal’ icing, which I loved because that is one thing that I was worried about. The texture is where I was really really disappointed though. It’s structure was that of a donut but it was so so dry that i couldn’t really swallow it easily and I didn’t enjoy it straight out of the tub at all. I was really hoping for great things with this brand so decided rather than throwing it away, I would try microwaving it and serving it with some Greek yoghurt to see if it was better warmed up. OH YES. IT WAS. Seriously, the chocolate flavour came out more, as did the orange and it was so soft and perfectly moist like a donut should be. 


Overall, I would definitely be willing to try another Jim Buddy’s protein donut, to see if I got a random bad one or one that was slightly old or something (especially because the other 3 flavours all sounded so great). If they are all as dry as the first I had, then I would possibly still buy them, but definitely only rarely as it would have to be a snack that I would have to microwave, so I couldn’t take it on the go, like I should be able to.

Gato & Co. Chocolate Aubergine Fondant 

Hello! 
I’m so sorry for how long it’s been since my last post! Again, I could make excuses but I’m not going to because I hate doing that. Basically I prioritised other things over posting on here. 
Anyway, I’m back with a bang because today I’m reviewing something I picked up in Selfridges in London. It intrigued me so much and I haven’t seen anything online about it or the brand, so wanted to give it a go! 

As you can see from the title of the post, I’m talking about the Gato & Co. Chocoalte Aubergine Fondant with a sprinkling of Spirulina. Yes, sounds really really weird. I like weird though. I also like chocolate. I also like vegetables. I also like chocolate Fondant (my favourite dessert actually). Don’t like spirulina though, so I was a bit apprehensive. Also let’s be honest, if it’s not flour and sugar and butter it probably doesn’t taste as good as one that is. Anyway, on to the review. 


So you can eat these cold, but they reccomend to heat it up and eat it warm. I, of course, had to try it both ways. Had a small spoonful of it cold, which was nice. Similar to any fudgy brownie cold from the fridge, just not that strong a flavour I would say. A hint of spirulina came through, which as I said I’m not a fan of, but it was so so minimal it was just a tiny bit of something that if you didn’t know it was spirulina, you wouldn’t know what it was. 


The instructions say to put in the oven for 10 minutes in the pot with the lid off. It smelled nice and looked delicious but I was still unconvinced it could be like a normal fondant. 

It was surprisingly delicious though! I loved it! I would definitely say it’s not ‘Fondant’ like they market it, because it didn’t have a runny middle. However, it was a really good dense, fudgy, chocolatey brownie which I would happily eat again! It looks like a small portion but it’s rich enough that the size is actually very good. Again, I would have loved a runny middle but nevertheless, this was seriously tasty! 


The macros are relatively good for a health food product, 170 calories for the pot which is good I think and with only 9.7g fat, it’s a lot less than a normal chocolate fondant would be! I say it’s a health food product because some of the main ingredients are: cacao, almonds, aubergine, honey and spirulina so it’s definitely marketed at those who don’t want to eat a ‘normal’ dessert. 

Overall, I was very impressed. I tried another product from this brand aswell but have my eye on their orange, polenta and cardamom sponge because I didn’t try that and I now have high hopes based on what I have tried!! Excited to try the sponge, drooling just thinking about it haha!

Review: The Nordic Bakery, Marylebone 

Hi everyone, 

Hope you’ve had an amazing Christmas and enjoyed all the festivities (read: food). 
Today I’ve got another review of a cafe/coffee shop in London. I spent a few days in Marylebone before Christmas and have been desperate to try The Nordic Bakery for ages. I specifically wanted to have the cinnamon buns but was recently informed by a very reliable cinnamon bun source (aka scandinavians living in London) that there’s a different place that does better cinnamon buns, so I decided not to waste my time (or calories!) on sub-par buns.

I popped into the New Cavendish branch of this Scandi cafe after I’d done a morning workout. It also happened to be one of the coldest days of the year so I was in the mood for something warming. After about 10 minutes internally debating what to get, I ended up ordering their porridge to-go. We were staying only a few minutes walk away so I planned to eat it straight away when I got home. The lady serving me (who was particularly unfriendly and unhelpful) asked what topping I wanted. Bad move. I don’t do well with choices and decisions!! I could have honey, cinnamon or jam. I couldn’t choose between cinnamon or jam so went for both (which I was pleasantly surprised that they let me have!)

It took just under 10 minutes for her to bring my porridge from downstairs and add the toppings, which I thought was quite a long time. In the meantime, I was drooling over all the amazing looking pastries and bread on the counter! 

She presented my porridge to me in a ginormous takeaway cardboard container, with a lid on to keep it hot and a wooden spoon. The porridge stayed lovely and warm in the 5 minutes it took me to walk to where we were staying and dig in. The spoon, however, was the most awful porridge instrument I’ve ever seen. You’re probably thinking “how much can a spoon affect the porridge?”. My answer = a lot. It changed the whole porridge experience. It tasted wooden and sucked up some of the liquid, so I quickly whipped out a real spoon to enjoy the rest of my breakfast. 


I haven’t actually said how the porridge tasted yet! Sorry for the rambling! I’ll make the rest quite quick. IT WAS SO YUMMY. I didn’t know this when I ordered but you can ask for them to make it with whatever milk you like (soya is the non-diary option they have available) but because I just asked for the porridge, they made mine with whole milk, which is the default I believe. Doesn’t surprise me because it was so so creamy it must have been full-fat milk. The mixture of grains they use to make it – rye and oats also contributes to the creaminess (according to their website, anyway!).

Onto the toppings: It had such a lovely cinnamon taste on top (shame it was only sprinkled on the top layer really) and the jam was honestly amazing. I actually went back in to ask which jam they use on the porridge because I wanted to buy some and they sell 3 types in the cafe: strawberry, blueberry and lingonberry (all of which are sugar free so I was excited that it could taste that nice!) but the man told me the jam they use on the porridge is actually not one of the ones they sell, it’s a different recipe! I was so annoyed because seriously this jam was good – probably 99% sugar but I’m telling myself it was the post-workout anabolic window so it’s ok. 🙈 

The porridge was so big I only managed to have like 1/3rd of it (because I had to have a source of protein with it aswell as it was after my workout) but I think if that were all you were eating still half or three quarters of it would be plenty! It was very filling!

Overall, I’d definitely get the porridge from The Nordic Bakery again, I’d like to try it made with water or skimmed milk to see if it’s still as creamy and delicious. I’d also like to try it eating in the cafe, rather than taking it away. Everything else they did looked and sounded delicious too, all the sandwiches and the other breakfasts and pastries, so I’m for sure planning to go again!

Emily’s fruit crisps: Crunchy Pineapple

Hey everyone,

Sorry its been such an age since I blogged last, not going to make excuses, its just life basically!

Today I’m doing a quick review for you of a product that has recently become one of my favourites! So I’ve been really into fruit ‘crisps’ recently, after having tried the apple ones from both Marks and Spencer and the Giving Earth Mango ones (which I can do a separate review of if you’d like to see that?).

Anyway below is what the bag looks like, I really like the packaging, I think they look very eye-catching and quite upmarket which is nice. The bags are only 30g and (like normal crisps) you do get a lot of air in the bag but I think thats so they don’t all get crushed before you open them. The bag is convenient to take around with you but its a shame its not resealable because I think if you leave the bag open, thats when they would go soggy but I just put a clip on the bag to stop that (unless you eat the whole bag in one go, which is completely understandable, I just like to draw out my snacks haha).

Tastewise, I didn’t think I would like these as much as I actually do because I’ve only recently started liking pineapple itself. However, these are really yummy! I wouldn’t say they taste extremely pineapple-y, its just a nice fruity sweetness at first and then later on, you can detect the pineapple.

They are really crunchy and crispy which is so nice and means they work really well if you just need a little sweet snack by itself or crumbled up over yoghurt almost like a granola kind of thing. The only criticism I have with these is that they have used palm oil , however I think thats what gives them the delicious crunch they have. On the packet it does say that its ‘RSPO-certified sustainable’ palm oil, although I still think palm oil isn’t the best health-wise but they clearly haven’t used that much because there is not that much fat in them, so I’m not too bothered. There are much much worse things you could snack on! They also count as one of your 5 a day which is good!

My experience: Singapore

Hi everyone,

Hope you’re all having a lovely day (or night) and thanks for coming over to read another post! Today I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences of Singapore with you all as I recently visited on my way to Australia!

So to start, I will say that I have never been to Asia before this visit. My dad has visited Singapore tonnes of times on business but neither me, my mum nor my brother had ever been. I was really excited to go because 1. I had been told it was really clean 2. Shopping 3.I knew for a fact it was a foodie’s paradise!

  

We stayed at the Shangri-La (view of my balcony above) which is only about a 5-10 minute drive to Orchard Road (the main shopping road) so the hotel location was really good. If you want, I can do a post reviewing the Shangri-La in detail, just leave me a comment letting me know! The rooms were big and modern. The gym was awesome (pictured below from outside), the pool was really nice and the food was too notch! Overall – very impressed! 

  
The weather: My dad had warned us that it was VERY hot and humid in Singapore and that it rains everyday at around 3 or 4 pm. I can definitely vouch for the humidity – it was seriously sticky! It only rained on our first day for about 30 minutes but it was quite heavy rain (good excuse to duck into some shops!).

 

 

What we did: We only had a few days in Singapore and we wanted to not plan or book too much because we didn’t know how jet lagged we would be (it turned out – not very!). We shopped on Orchard Road (pictured above), went to Raffles (probably better to go there for a meal/drink) to look around, went to some shopping centres, ate at Dempsey hill, visited the Marina Bay Sands for dinner (100% recommended), chilled around the pool and relaxed! It would have been nice to go to Sentosa Island if we had been there longer or if my brother and I were younger but we didn’t particularly want to and I don’t really feel like I missed out!

  

FOOD: For sure I would recommend going to Naddaman in the Shangri-La for Teppenyaki for dinner! My first Teppenyaki experience and it was so yum! (Pictured above.) Also, The Waterfall restaurant (an Italian) also at the Shangri-La was probably the best Italian I’ve ever had – and that SERIOUSLY says something – and omg I still hate myself for not ordering dessert there! Ce la vie restaurant on the top of the Marina Bay Sands was one of the best evenings ever for me – the food was incredible, the view was so unique, the service was amazing, what more could you want? (Pictures below). I wanted to do more breakfast/brunch I while we were there but unfortunately we only got to go out once in the morning – to Rider’s Cafe. This is somewhere I would say you have to visit if you go to Singapore as it was a really cool location and the food was literally the stuff of dreams! (Yes. I ordered 2 breakfasts. It had to be done.)

   

 

Generally I felt really safe in Sinagpore, it was very clean, the service was very good. The city had a very cosmopolitan feel, with everything very modern and trendy. Taxis were a bit of a struggle (to call one, you need to give a Singapore mobile number, SILLY IDEA). It was for sure a foodie’s paradise as there were truffle fries literally everywhere. My idea of heaven.

  

I really enjoyed Singapore and would definitely stay there as a stopover on the way to or from Australia again. I personally don’t think I would specifically go there on holiday for a week or two but for a few days it was incredible!

Is this really happening?

Is this really happening? That’s what’s going through my head right now as I sit here on my sofa on a chilled tuesday afternoon writing my first blog post. The reason I’m asking this question is because having my own blog is something I have imagined for ages, but never really gotten around to… until now. So I suppose I’m a bit apprehensive about how this will go. What’s the worst that can happen though?

Anyway, enough of all that. Just so you know, this blog, as I’m sure you can guess, will be about my journey of food discovery. Sounds very cliché I know, but it’s true. If you want to read a bit more about me, then have a look at the section over there titled (funnily enough) ‘About me’. Basically, I’m a former picky eater who now seems to love every food I come into contact with (there are a few exceptions of course). I now love discovering new recipes, restaurants and individual foods and I will bring you along to share these experiences with me. I hope you come back for some sometimes delicious, sometimes not so delicious, sometimes funny, sometimes strange, but always entertaining food related posts!
